Getting to Know Fonts and Typestyles

Using Publisher, create a new document. (Letter 8.5" x 11"). Save the file as "Font Exercise" in your MP1 Desktop Publishing folder.

Page Setup:
  • Margins = 1" on all sides
  • Orientation = Portrait
Type each of the words or phrases below in separate text boxes on your page:
  • MTV (may be replaced by your favorite music station)
  • Happy Birthday!
  • Dave Matthews Band (may be replaced with your favorite band/artist)
  • Global Warming
  • You're Fired!
  • Happy Halloween!
  • Comic Book
  • American Idol (may be replaced with your favorite reality show)
  • The Stock Market Crashes
  • Desktop Publishing Class
  • The Gap (may be replaced with your favorite store)
  • Horror Show
  • NEW!
  • Out of this Galaxy
  • New York Times
  • Poster Headline
Place each text box randomly around the page (making sure to keep them within the page margins)

Select each word or phrase in the list and change its font, typestyle (bold, italic, underline, etc.) and point size. Try to select fonts that, when viewed on screen or on paper, coordinate well with the meaning of each word or phrase in the list.

Proofread your work carefully for accuracy, design, and format

Resave the file

Print in color and submit.
